This lecture will address how the understanding of the Jewish past in the Islamic world is colored by the geo-politics of today, not only in the “West” but in the Muslim world itself, with often surprising consequences. Professor Gottreich will focus on Morocco, a country that once had the largest Jewish population in the Arab world and is currently experiencing a significant wave of philosemitism despite the emigration of most of its Jews.

Emily Gottreich is chair of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley. Her publications include The Mellah of Marrakech: Jewish and Muslim Space in Morocco’s Red City, the forthcoming work Jewish Morocco: A History from Pre-Islamic to Post-Colonial Times, and the co-edited book Jewish Culture and Society in North Africa.
