From April 1- May 20, 2015 Not Forgotten, an exhibit of collages/mixed media using old photographs from families of refugees depicting Jewish life in the Middle East and North Africa at the beginning and middle of the 20th century, will be on display at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center. JIMENA: Jews Indigenous to the Middle East & North Africa will be holding a young adult reception on Wednesday, May 6th to celebrate Sephardic Jewish life by expanding exposure of the Not Forgotten exhibit, increase awareness of Middle Eastern Jewish culture, and to give young adults the opportunity to celebrate the various fibers of their Jewish identity.
Young adult attendees will be given the opportunity to engage in activities centered around Jewish identity and self-expression, as well as meet and interact with other community members. The event will include a North African and Middle Eastern tasting table, Egyptian silent film and music, an interactive identity board, and the opportunity to participate in JIMENA’s Digital Experience Booth. Analucia Lopezrevoredo, JIMENA’s San Francisco Program Director notes that, “This event, which is organized by JIMENA’s Young Adult Committee, is the culmination of a year of hard work to educate and engage our young adult community in Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish life. More than just a fun networking opportunity, we hope to spark conversations on the diverse identities and backgrounds of attendees. We hope to see a large turnout of young Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews, but welcome folks of all backgrounds.”
Cosponsors include: Birthright NEXT, Moishe House Palo Alto, StandWithUs, World Zionist Organization, and Zionist Organization of America. With special thanks to Oshman Family JCC, Alain and Esmeralda Azan, and Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels for their additional support of this program.
