As part of our Journey to the Mizrah curriculum, JIMENA’s lesson plan on Jewish refugees from the Middle East and North Africa will help students gain a deeper understanding of the refugee experience and foster empathy towards the challenges faced by individuals who are considered ‘strangers’.

The objective of this lesson is to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the often overlooked Jewish refugees from the Middle East and North Africa. Through the exploration of video clips and interviews featuring Jewish refugees who fled Arab lands in the early 1950s, students will be able to establish connections between these refugees and their impact on the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Additionally, an art activity will encourage students to delve further into the refugee experience, promoting empathy and understanding for those who find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances.
