Expanding Holocaust Era Education
The Farhud and Jewish Experiences in the Middle East and North Africa
The Holocaust was not confined to Europe. Nazi ideology, propaganda, and coordinated antisemitic violence reached the Middle East and North Africa. On June 1 and 2, 1941, during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, rioters in Baghdad murdered between 150 and 180 Jews and injured hundreds more in the pogrom known as the Farhud. Why It Matters Now
Closing a critical gap
1. Commemorating the Farhud
Each June, communities mark the anniversary of the 1941 pogrom against the Jews of Baghdad, a moment many institutions are now choosing to recognize.
2. Completing the history
Most Holocaust education still leaves out the Jews of the Middle East and North Africa, who faced Nazi propaganda, discriminatory laws, labor camps, and violence.
3. Connecting past and present
Understanding this history helps educators address the antisemitism that students and visitors encounter today.
