Enrico Macias, Sephardic Superstar
Born Gaston Ghrenassia in Constantine in 1938, Enrico Macias fled Algeria in 1961 after his father in law, the great Andalusian musician Cheikh Raymond Leyris, was murdered. His song "Adieu mon pays" became an anthem for the Jews who left North Africa, and his music remains a staple of Sephardic celebrations around the world.
