In September 1961, in the midst of the Algerian War, Paul Benhamou left his mother and his hometown of Tlemcen to study in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship. Writing from Lafayette, Indiana, he reflects on that departure and on the country he lost. The memoir is part of the archive of Morial, the association that preserves the memory and traditions of Algeria's Jews.
