The Illuminator of Blinded Landscapes
Erez Biton was born in Oran, Algeria, in 1942 to Moroccan Jewish parents and came to Israel as a child, where an explosion in 1953 took his sight. He went on to become the founding father of Sephardic poetry in Israel and, in 2015, the first Sephardic Jew to win the Israel Prize for literature. This profile follows his life, his blindness, and the Moroccan heritage at the heart of his poems.
